MIPS

In Bicycle Helmets equipped with MIPS BPS, one of the bearings between the head and the outer hard layer of the helmet is a low-friction bearing that allows the outer part of the helmet to slide relative to the head. This results in a reduction in the rotational movement that could otherwise be transmitted to the brain.^[3]

The technology is developed by specialists at Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and a brain surgeon of Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm 1996.^[4] Several researchers have linked serious brain injuries such as Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI) and Subdural Hematoma (SDH) with the power transmission to the brain that can occur during rotational movement after a skewed stroke.^[5]

The reduction of power transmission mimics the human natural protection system, which consists in the fact that the brain is surrounded by cerebrospinal fluid which protects the brain during an oblique stroke by letting it slide slightly inside the head. By mimicking the cerebrospinal fluid, MIPS BPS allows the brain and head to move inside the helmet^[6] 10-15 mm in all directions^[7] and reduces the harmful energy transfer of the rotational movement to the brain.^[6]
